Open Question: Would it be best to get new windows first THEN a new furnace?
I recently bought a home that needs both windows and a new furnace (windows are drafty as heck). The current furnace works fine it’s just really old and highly energy inefficient. My inspector said that if I replace the furnace I can save tons of money on my bills and it would pay for itself overtime (with the savings). I’m afraid if I replace the furnace (which provides both heating and cooling for the home) I will continue to lose money out the window, literally! What would you advise?

Open Question: If I would save £351.67 a month or £4220.04 per year. Which 5 investments I would make in the UK?
An example like this: THX
Investment Portfolio
I would save $403.67 a month or $4 844.04 per year. Shown below are 5 investments I would make.

Investment #1: RRSP (G1C’s)

To open this account it will cost $1 000 and each month I will put in $150. After every year my investment will go up 4%. This figure doesn’t change at all because a GIC is a locked in investment. In Table 1 you will see how much money I will make in one year with this fund.

Table 1

Amount
January$1 150
February$1 300
March $1 450
April$1 600
May$1 750
June$1 900
July$2 050
August$2 200
September$2 350
October$2 500
November$2 650
December$2 800
TOTAL MONEY AT YEAR’S END$2 800
TOTAL AFTER INTEREST$2 912

The source of this investment is the Toronto Dominion Bank.

Investment #2: GIC

Once again this account cost $1 000 to open. This time I will place $100 in each month. At the end of each year, the total amount invested will go up 4%. This has always been the rate it goes up by, therefore there is no product history.
On the next page is a table (Table 2) showing the growth of this investment over a period of one year.

Table 2

Amount
January$1 100
February$1 200
March $1 300
April$1 400
May$1 500
June$1 600
July$1 700
August$1 800
September$1 900
October$2 000
November$2 100
December$2 200
TOTAL MONEY AT YEAR’S END$2 200
TOTAL AFTER INTEREST$2 288

The source of this investment is the Toronto Dominion Bank.

Investment #3: Mutual Funds

I chose to invest in Science and Technology Funds for my third investment. The current price of this product is $48.73 per unit. Shown below in Graph 1 is the product growth in the last 5 years.

Graph 1

The source of this investment is the Toronto Dominion Bank.

Investment #4 and #5: Collectibles – Hockey Cards (4) and Basketball Cards (5)

In 1996 a local sports shop was closing and therefore getting rid of all of their stock. A big chunk of that was sports cards, mainly Hockey and Basketball cards. The owner had about 500 cards left over and all of high profile players. A lot of them were rookie cards of big name players and other expensive ones. he had them all for sale for a price of $100. My dad saw this an realized what a good investment this would be. So after a bit of negotiating we got the guy down to $50 and that was good enough for us.
Although you can’t really discuss the trends in this investment being that it is so unpredictable, I can tell you that a few cards I have of big name players who have since retired (Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, and Michael Jordan) and players whose careers have taken off (Shaq’s rookie) cards have gone up a fair amount.

Investment Summary:

The reason I selected the investments I did is that the job of a criminologist is extremely demanding and I wouldn’t have time to be playing the stock market and checking the ticker every two seconds. Also, I’m not really the dangerous investment kind of person. I don’t like to see hard earned money go down the toilet because some company I don’t care about screwed up. Plus, I’m just starting out in the world. I don’t feel like being a 20-something bankruptcy.
