Open Question: If you have $750 to enhance the tank system of a aquarium shop, how would you spend it?
I have a part time job installing aquariums. For this company, I also quarantine and “grow out” their New World & African Cichlids, mainly in 10 or 14 gallon tanks many would consider crowded…
Their business is waaay down. I used to do 3+ installations a week, now I’m lucky if I do 1 per week. I used to hold as many as 14 tanks of stock. Presently I’m only taking care of 6 tanks. Soon that may come to a stop completely.
So I found a new store to do work for. I’ll still do what I can with the first store, if they have work for me to do.
This new store is a somewhat dumpy pet store with a fish department.
Right now, they have 6) 25 gallon tanks (24×12x20), 6) 20 gallon high tanks (24×12x16) and 6) 15 gallon tanks (24×12x12). Basically they constructed 3 tier shelves from 2×4’s that hold 2 tanks per tier. They have three of these home made shelves and they are painted black.
He uses old school corner filters with several air pumps. He wants to keep that look and style.
I have no idea how large of a tank can be filtered with these things…

Personally, I would suggest going to a wider tank like 30″ to accommodate larger fish. Maybe a stack with 37 (30×12x22) on the bottom, 29 (30×12x18) in the middle and 20 long (30×12x12) on the top. I’m worried about the weight a little. I’d like to also do something more visually appealing like 23 flat back hex (24×12x20.5) or 28 Euro/Bow (24×15x18) from Perfecto. Perhaps 2-3″ only supported on plywood shelves sticking out from the main structure of 2×4’s.
He has about a $750 budget to work with. He’s looking to me for advice. I just don’t know much about these DIY structures. If you have built them even larger, say a 48″ long tank please let me know how it worked out. I’d hate to give this guy advice only to see maybe 150 gallons of broken aquariums on the floor some morning when they come in.
Likewise, if you have experience with these corner filters in larger tanks, let me know how it worked out. I use Hagen AquaClear power filters with great success on all my tanks, personal and professional.
Thanks for your tips!
