Open Question: So if Bush’s irresponsible spending got us into this financial quagmire, how will Barack’s get us out?
In theory, money printed by the fed is in response to a promise to pay (like a government bond). So technically, the money is borrowed.
So, in theory, when the money is paid back, there is no net inflation or deflation.
The imbalance arises from two sources.
1. The government is not a responsible borrower. It borrows more to pay back previous loans. This creates an inflationary spiral.
2. Fractional reserve banking is practiced, this allows the fed to issue as much as 10 times the amount of money the government authorized in the original bond.
The reason people are in financial distress is because the money borrowed by the government was not invested in wealth creation.
Wealth is measured in terms of the availability of goods and services.
Money borrowed by the government creates jobs that don’t create wealth, they create regulation, regulations imposed on private sector businesses which increases the cost of doing business for those private enterprises which do create wealth.
Because the cost of production in countries without the regulatory and/or labor union burden of American companies is much lower, American companies must relocate or face extinction.
Barack wants to borrow money to “create” jobs. Jobs that don’t result in wealth creation. This will only further weaken an already crippled economy.
If he really wanted to get the country back on its feet, he’d make that money available to private sector companies for investment in new tooling and factories.
People don’t need government’s help to create wealth. They’ll do it on their own. They just need government to get out of the way and stop shrinking the value of money.
Open Question: What are the risks of buying Dillard’s (and similar) stocks right now?
Correct me if I’m wrong…but it seems like now is a good time to buy stock in companies that are likely to stick around through the recession–especially if they were doing well up until the recession, and are likely to do well again once they’re back on track.
Just for the sake of having an example (I would of course diversify)…if I were to buy Dillard’s stock right now, what risks should I consider? Obviously if they end up going out of business I would lose the money I invested in them.
But what if Dillard’s were to be bought by another company (like Parisian’s was bought by Belk)? Would I lose my investment?
I’m a beginner at this, so please try to explain in a “…for dummies” kind of way lol
